About The National Trust for Scotland
The National Trust for Scotland is Scotland’s leading voluntary conservation body. It is not a government department, but a charity supported by its membership of over a quarter of a million people.
The Trust was founded in 1931 by a small group of Scots concerned at the growing threat to the country’s natural and built heritage. Now it is an influential body with more than a hundred diverse properties. Its remit, set out in various Acts of Parliament, is to promote the care and conservation of the Scottish landscape and historic buildings while providing access for the public to enjoy them.
Around 76,000 hectares (188,000 acres) of countryside are in the Trust’s care, encompassing farmland and forest, mountain and moor, waterfalls and islands as well as dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline and beautiful gardens. The Trust owns buildings of historical and architectural importance, from castles and crofts to cottages, birthplaces of famous Scots and properties rich in social and industrial history.
The future of this heritage depends on the ability of The National Trust for Scotland to meet ever-increasing financial demands. We can do this only with the help of our membership. Thank you for supporting our valuable work.
