Public transport accessible. Hoolity Ha’ was originally occupied by a whole family of about 8 people. Like a railway signalman, the gatekeeper operated an early warning system, linked by wire to the castle, to forewarn the staff of the Marquess’s return in his carriage. The footmen could all scuttle outside and be ready to greet his Lordship as he swept round the carriage ring and arrived at the front door of the castle. Built in the 1820s as the gatehouse serving the original north entrance into the estate, this exquisite gate lodge is perched on the edge of Glenside Gorge by Hoolity Bridge. The lodge contains some fine pieces of antique furniture and combines the practicalities of modern-day living with the character of the original building. The lounge doubles as a bedroom in this, Scotland’s grandest bedsit!
