Original features, including open fireplaces, have been retained in this charming property, which was fully redecorated in 2009. Dochgarroch Cottage is a pretty lock-keepers' cottage situated at the head of the Caledonian Canal. The cottage has an enclosed garden, just beyond which runs the canal. There are excellent views of the lock, the canal, the yachts and the ducks from the front windows. The cottage comprises 1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom, bathroom with WC and roll-top bath only (no shower) on the first floor; on the ground floor is the kitchen with dining area, sitting room with open fire, and an enclosed front garden with drying green to the side.

This most attractive lodge sits at the entrance to Threave Garden, famous for its breathtaking daffodils in April. The lodge is contemporary with Threave House (1872), built in red sandstone, and was used by the housekeeper to the Gordon family. With spectacular views of Carlingwark Loch, Gate Lodge is an excellent place from which to explore Dumfries & Galloway. It is approximately 1 mile west of Castle Douglas. A large garden surrounds the lodge, with garden furniture and a parking area. Families with young children should be aware that this is not an enclosed garden. First floor: one twin and one single bedroom. Ground floor: sitting room with open fire; fully equipped kitchen with separate dining room; double bedroom; bathroom with shower over bath; additional WC with shower and wash basin.

The old Kelton Mill, just off the A75, has been imaginatively converted into these delightful cottages (Millwheel & Granary), which are full of character and traditional charm with many original features. Children are most welcome. However, parents/guardians should be aware of the stream behind both cottages and also the road at the front of the building. First floor: sitting room, two twin bedrooms and bathroom with shower over bath. Ground floor: large open-plan kitchen with attractive dining area, separate WC, small walled patio area with views across to the stream.

Harmony Garden is a delightful tranquil walled garden comprising lawn, herbaceous and mixed borders, vegetable and fruit areas, and a rich display of spring bulbs. The garden is set around an early 19th-century house (not open to the public), built by a Melrose joiner, who named it after the Jamaican pimento plantation where he had made his fortune. It is situated near Priorwood Garden, also owned by the Trust, which specialises in the cultivation of flowers for drying. A good selection of shops is available in Melrose including those selling knitwear, tweeds, books and antiques. There is also an excellent choice of hotels and restaurants for eating out.
