Area:
Ayrshire, Arran, Argyll & The Kintyre Peninsula

Public transport accessible. Hoolity Ha’ was originally occupied by a whole family of about 8 people. Like a railway signalman, the gatekeeper operated an early warning system, linked by wire to the castle, to forewarn the staff of the Marquess’s return in his carriage. The footmen could all scuttle outside and be ready to greet his Lordship as he swept round the carriage ring and arrived at the front door of the castle. Built in the 1820s as the gatehouse serving the original north entrance into the estate, this exquisite gate lodge is perched on the edge of Glenside Gorge by Hoolity Bridge. The lodge contains some fine pieces of antique furniture and combines the practicalities of modern-day living with the character of the original building. The lounge doubles as a bedroom in this, Scotland’s grandest bedsit!

The castle will be closed throughout 2008 (and well into 2009) for major conservation work. The work will include stripping the cement based coating, or harl, from the external walls (this first part of the work is scheduled to be finished long before the start of the 2008 holiday season) and reharling in a more appropriate lime based coating and also doing some repairs to the slate roof slopes. The castle will be shrouded in scaffolding and there may be times when there is some noise during the day. It is for this reason that the prices for these two cottages will be reduced by £100 per week for 2008. Wild honeysuckle flourishes in the delightful garden of this secluded two-storey stone cottage, which stands behind Steading Cottage and about 100 yards from the castle itself. Parking is available at the side of the garden. Two twin bedrooms on the first floor and a sitting room with open fire, dining room, kitchen and bathroom with bath and shower over bath on the ground floor.
